Latin America is a land of extremes: the deepest canyon, the second highest mountain range, the highest navigable lake, the biggest salt flat… the list goes on and on. With so many extreme locations, it only makes since that there are a lot of extreme activities and adventures to go along with these places as well. There are several crazy things you can do during your Latin America travel adventures-if you’re brave enough, that is.

The Amazon. The Amazon sprawls across several Latin American countries, including Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, and Brazil. If you want true adventure, you need to get away from the typical jungle towns and find complete isolation. Remember, there are still un-contacted tribes living in this jungle! Go for an Amazon trek, or choose to travel between countries via the Amazon River and its tributaries. Remember pack the buy spray!

Go rafting. Peru is home to many things, and impressive white water rafting opportunities is one of them. The Andes Mountain range that runs through Peru is second in height only to the Himalayas, so you can only imagine the types of rapids that kind of glacier water rushing downhill creates. One great spot, after you tour Cusco and Machu Picchu of course, is the Rio Apurmac. You’ll find Class IV rapids here.

Sail the Galapagos. Yes, there many safe and touristy boats that travel to the Galapagos-but even these are adventurous because you’re so close to the wildlife ( evenswimming with sharks!). However, if you want something a bit more intense there are many eco and adventure trips that operate in this region, including extensive animal study trips or trips that offer extreme kayaking, diving, snorkeling, and everything else you can image.

Trek Patagonia. The freezing tip of Patagonia is no man’s land, but if you want to make it yours, there are several places that offer icy climbs and treks. If sleeping inside a tiny tent in freezing temperatures is your cup of tea, Patagonia will be happy to serve you. Of course, even a standard trip to Argentina that includes a Patagonia tour is adventurous-you’re surrounded by icy nothingness!

Bike the Most Dangerous Road in the World. Just outside of La Paz, Bolivia, is a frightening path that holds the record for claiming more lives than any other main road. Luckily a new road has been constructed for motorized vehicles so they aren’t forced to drive this path as often anymore, but you can bike down it and whip around its dangerous curves and peer down the steep canyons just inches from the edge of the road for yourself.
